Richard Simmons Biography, Net Worth, Is He Gay, Dead or Alive?

Fitness genius and former television inspiration, Richard Simmons is a personality widely known as the “sweat the oldies” exercise routine. Challenged by his own weight as a teenager, the fitness guru proved that no matter what you’ve won, any weight is attainable.

His fitness coaching career began in the 1970’s and 1980’s and he was already making a name for himself as one of the most reliable trainers to follow. He became even more prominent in the 2000s than he had ever been in the 1990s, but despite his success, he hastily withdrew from the public eye in 2014. Find out what he’s been up to so far and why he’s decided to stay in his lane ever since.

Richard Simmons’ Bio

Richard Simmons was born at Milton Teagle Simmons12. July 1948 in New Orleans Louisiana to parents Leonard Douglas Simmons, Sr. and Shirley May. Both parents were in show business, his father was a master of ceremonies and his mother a traveling dancer. He has one sibling, an older brother named Leonard Jr.

Simmons attended Cor Jesu High School, now called Brother Martin High School. He attended the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and later received his MA from Florida State University.

weight loss journey

Simmons had weight problems as a child. In fact, he was obese, weighing a whopping 182 pounds. At some point in his life, he realized that being so heavy was unhealthy. His original plan was to become a priest, but as he gained weight and reached 122 kg (268 pounds), he quickly reconsidered his health and set out on a weight-loss journey.

He tried using other people’s idea but wasn’t impressed by the unhealthy tips most of them offered. He had to develop his own guidelines that saw him shadow over 100 pounds. The success motivated him to open his own gym, providing a nurturing and supportive environment for overweight people after moving to Los Angeles. His dedication and skill in this field has brought him fame when he has featured his routines and products on television.

Like the number of people he helped say goodbye, the real weight grew, he got more and more into the limelight and appeared on television more and more often. He’s reportedly helped people lose over £10million combined over the years. His career in the media was excellent until he suddenly left the public eye in 2014 and has stayed away ever since. His sudden absence has sparked many rumours, and despite offering random audio interviews in which he reassured people that he was fine, the Missing Richard Simmons podcast launched in 2017 and explored why Simmons left the media without notice.

Is he dead or alive?

The 5ft 7in tall coach is very much alive despite the many death rumors he has endured throughout his career, largely because he has decided not to make public appearances since 2014.

The rumors about his hostage, possible illness, death or gender reassignment have been in the air since his gym suddenly closed and he stopped appearing online. However, he once shared an old picture on his social media platform, assuring the world that he was happy, healthy and fine, only that he decided to continue his business while he was underwater. While everyone still wonders why he took such big steps, judging by his sporadic audio testimonies, Simmons is alive and well.

Is Richard Simmons Happy?

Although speculation has been rife that Simmons is gay, particularly because of his behavior that allegedly hints at homosexuality, the fitness star has never openly said he is gay. His workout classes at his Beverly Hills studio have also been described as super gay classes, but the celebrity doesn’t seem to tolerate people forming opinions about his sexuality. Most recently, he sued two news houses for writing that he was undergoing sex reassignment surgery.

Unfortunately, he lost the case and had to pay reasonable attorneys’ fees, as the judge has argued that misidentifying some unchanging traits does not appear to do any harm to the traits’ reputation. In summary, Simmons is assumed not to be gay as he never took it upon himself to be one.

Wealth (income and earnings)

For the vast majority of people, the idea of getting massive pay from fitness is impossible, but for Richard Simmons, a well-known fitness personality, this is his real life. The fitness legend sold over 20 million copies of workout tapes and CDs in the ’80s, with more than 65 million since he began coaching. His meal plan, titled Deal-A-Meal, has also been a top seller, with over 160 million sales recorded. The meal plan mainly focuses on portion and calorie control and other health factors.

Also, Simmons has taught many classes that aren’t usually free since the gym began in 1974 and closed in 2014. He recently held three workout classes a week, charging a total of $12 per head. Having worked in the training and coaching business for a long time, the expert has amassed a fortune of about $15 million including the value of his property, as well as his business in the aerobics studio, which was closed to the public without prior notice in 2016.
